With a storied history spanning over 1300 years, the Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba now stands as the undisputed symbol of the city. Seamlessly weaving together elements from both Muslim and Christian traditions, this monument blends Umayyad, Gothic, Plateresque, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture and style.

History

Originally, the site of the Great Mosque was a Roman temple, which was replaced by a Christian Visigoth. In 711, the structure was divided into two parts, and was used as a place of worship by both Muslims and Christians. However, in 784, with the region under the rule of the Umayyad Caliphate, the church was destroyed and construction of the Great Mosque began.

Since 1236, when Córdoba was reconquered by Ferdinand III, the mosque has served as a Christian cathedral, with the interior being heavily developed in the 16th century under King Charles V.

The Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba is easily accessible on bus lines 3 or 12, which will bring you to Puerta del Puente.
