    The trip to the castle was very beautiful. Stephanie was the guide, very attentive to the group and explained in detail the history of Neuschwanstein Castle and King Ludwig II. She was very punctual at the start of the trip, on a very comfortable and clean bus. The castle area is beautiful; you should wear comfortable shoes because it's an area where you can walk along paths through the forest, or take the road that leads up to the castle, or take the bus. The view from the bridge is very beautiful.

Neuschwanstein Castle, located in southern Germany, is one of Europe’s most magical and photographed destinations. Its fairy-tale silhouette, nestled among mountains and forests, looks like it was pulled straight from a storybook. Dreaming of visiting?

A bit of history

The castle was commissioned in the 19th century by Ludwig II of Bavaria, also known as the Mad King for his eccentricities and deep love of art and fantasy.

The design was heavily inspired by Germanic legends and Wagner’s operas. In fact, Ludwig was so involved in the project that he personally oversaw every draft and detail.

Ironically, the king never saw the castle fully completed — he died before construction was finished. However, he did live there for a time after being declared unfit to rule by the Bavarian government due to mounting debts.

How to get to Neuschwanstein Castle from Munich

You can reach Neuschwanstein Castle by car or public transport, but the most convenient and hassle-free option is to join an organized tour from Munich, like those offered by Civitatis. Depending on the route and pace, the journey takes between 2 to 3 hours (about 75–95 miles / 120–150 km).

Is Neuschwanstein the inspiration behind the 'Disney Castle'?

It’s widely believed that Neuschwanstein inspired the design of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. The building also reflects the romantic universe of Hans Christian Andersen, whose tales enchanted Ludwig II, an avid lover of fables like The Little Mermaid.
